The Safer Practice Framework is a self-assessment tool that can assist General Practice teams to focus on patient safety and quality improvement activity, to deliver safer quality care.

The framework has been designed and tested by Wessex Patient Safety Collaborative, more than 30 General Practice teams and Wessex Local Medical Committee who endorse the framework to support a patient safety culture in Primary Care.

During testing 100% of users identified that the framework was a useful tool to increase patient safety awareness.

Designed around the 5 priority areas identified by the Care Quality Commission (CQC); are you safe, are you effective, are you caring, are you responsive and are you well led, the framework is offered as a voluntary tool to help bring focus and clarity to the day to day business of General Practice.

It is recommended to complete the framework as a multi-professional practice team to encourage staff engagement, to create a shared vision and ensure that shared intelligence is gathered from multiple sources.

'During testing we have found that engagement at the outset encourages shared ownership and assists in generating commitment to engage with assessment and any subsequent improvement work.'

By self-assessing each domain and rating as red, amber, green or not applicable the framework can help you to identify areas of good practice which can be replicated and areas where you may want to focus your improvement effort.

In partnership with Wessex AHSN the Safer Practice Framework has been integrated into the QUIQCARE GP Solution and is ready for deployment straight away.

"Given the success of the Wessex pilot it seems clear that the benefit of this simple and effective tool is ripe to be adopted across all regions as an essential part of Practice management."

"QuiqCare is definitely worth looking at, the breadth of functionality offered for the price represents good value. I can see that the years of development working with the NHS and other areas of health and social care have resulted in a powerful platform that I would recommend to other practices looking to save admin time and focus on quality improvement."
